Covid-19 and the Impact it has Made
Covid-19, or, the coronavirus, has taken the world by storm. When I first heard about Covid-19, I never imagined that it would get this bad. This situation that I am currently in still does not feel real to me, although I know that it is real and it is very serious. But what is the coronavirus really? coronaviruses are not actually a specific virus but really a big family of viruses. Usually, coronaviruses that can infect humans are not super serious and are usually about as bad as getting a cold. However, There are coronaviruses that can infect animals as well, and in very rare cases, they can also infect humans. Unfortunately, this seems to be what has happened. It is also very uncommon that the disease can be spread through close contact, which Covid-19 is. All this being said, something like this has happened before. You may have heard of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome, or SARS. There is also MERS (Middle East Acute Respiratory Syndrome.) Some symptoms of Covid-19 are: fever, cough, pneumonia in both of you lungs, and difficulty breathing.
When I first heard that the coronavirus was going to potentially close schools, I can't say I wasn't just a little excited. I do enjoy school, and I especially liked seeing my friends everyday, but I was excited for a break longer than two weeks. I was not really worried about the coronavirus yet, and I was just excited for spring break to roll around so I could go away on my planned vacation. However, things changed very quick. I found out that I would no longer be going on vacation, and I was pretty upset, even though I did realize that it was the best idea, and it would not be safe for us to go. When school was let out for spring break, I was less excited than I originally had been, but I was looking forward to hanging out with my friends every day, and to sleeping in. Sadly, I have not seen my friends in about a month. I am starting to get really bored and I am ready for school to start back up again, and I want to see my friends more than almost anything, but I know I should not, for the sake of everybody else. Even though I am bored and lonely and tired of being stuck at home, I have to stay home for those who are more at risk, and for people who can't. Not everybody can afford to stay home during this time, and not everybody does. For instance: the healthcare workers. I am so incredibly grateful for all the amazing healthcare workers who are putting themselves at risk every day to keep us safe. They are working so hard and doing a pretty good job, (at least in Canada) to control this pandemic, and they need us to stay home. So, the next time you think about hanging out with your friends during this time, thinking that it doesn't matter and you will be fine, I urge you to reconsider. Even if you make it out okay, others will not and have not. You are part of the solution. Social distancing and self-isolation work. Please, for all of us, stay home.
